Jimi Hendrix was inspired to write this song after having a dream about being under the sea surrounded by a purple haze. He became lost and was terrified, but his faith in Jesus saved him. In the song, the lyric "excuse me while I kiss the sky" is often interpreted as "excuse me while I kiss that guy." Hendrix contributed to this misinterpretation by pointing at fellow band members while singing this live in concert. Overall, this song is one of the greatest of all time.
